April 15, 2012 - Week 14 Update
It was a brief class. We did not cover any new material.
We reviewed:
- Days of week
- two paksha-s in a maasa
- tithi-s in each paksha
- nava grahas
- dvadasha raashi-s and sauramaana maasa-s
- two ayana-s in a year
- Six R^itus in a year
Homework: Children should find out the following details about themselves;
- janma nakshatra - The constellation in which moon was at the time of their birth
- janma raashi -- The zodiac sign or raashi in which moon was at the time of their birth
- sauramaana month - The zodiac sign or raashi in which Sun was at the time of their birth
- janma tithi and paksha -- What was the paksha (krishna or shukla) at the time of their birth and the phase of the chandra.
- chaandramaana month - Name of the chaandramaana maasa at the time of their birth. A chaandramaana maasa is made of two paksha-s and it runs shukla paksha prathamaa to amaavasya.
Each carries a point. Purpose of this homework is ensure that the children learn the basic details about themselves.
If the parent does not know these details, they can ask the children to write for Sri Rama. If they write both, they will get extra points.
Sri Rama's Details - punarvasu, karkaTaka, meSha, shukla paksha navami, and chaitra.

March 25, 2012 - Week 11 Update
- Review of pages 6 and 18. Children will be tested on 4/1/2012 from these two pages. Quiz will have 10 english words and they should write the equivalent saMskRta words. The can write the answers in roman lipi and no points will be taken for spelling errors. Grading will account for the age difference.
- We covered pages 19-20
Homework: Study pages 6 and 18.

February 19, 2012 - Week 6 Update
Class Notes:
- We discussed the meaning of the verse "kimekam daivatam loke ..."
- We wrote few sentences from the verse "kimekam daivatam loke ..."
- We discussed page number 11 (section A) from Abhayasa Pustakam
Homework:
- Write the meaning of verses "suklambaradharam ..." and "vyaasam vasiShTa ..." in English. (10 pts).
- Simple meaning is enough. You can write in any format. You will get points just for attempting this.
- You will get five bonus points for each verse if you write the original verse in devanagari.
- You can refer to any books you may have or refer to online resources.
- Write the sentences we practiced in the class (see the attached PDF) just once. ( 5 pts)
- Study the page 11 in Abhayasa Pustakam and complete exercise in section A -- we discussed all the answers in the class. Write the answers (just the answers - not the whole sentence). (12 pts).
- If you write the answers in devanagari, you will get extra 5 points.

February 12, 2012 - Week 5 Update
Class Notes:
- Children recited all the VS verses they learned so far
- They were quizzed on the meaning of the first verse
- We discussed the meaning of the verse shrutva dharmaann asheShena ...
- We learned to write the following
- पुनरेव
- व वा वि वी वु वू वृ वॄ वॣ वे वै वो वै वं वः
- They also learned how to say anusvara and the difference between अम् and अं
- We quickly reviewed first 10 pages of abhyaasa pustakam
- Children wanted a contest based on performance with three prizes and gave some guidelines for awarding it. We have to formalize it.
Homework:
- Read the first 10 pages of Abhyaasa Pustakam and bring your questions/doubts back to the class.
- Write व वा वि वी वु वू वृ वॄ वॢ वे वै वो वौ वं वः five times. Say it out loud when you write it. Please see the attached PDF file for the rendering of these letters in two different fonts.
- Writing वॢ is optional. I mentioned in the class that it is not frequently used. We will learn this in detail in next class and on how to pronounce it.
February 5, 2012 - Week 4 Update
1. Meanings of the two new VS verses we learned today:

2. Review of the meaning of first four verses.
3. Discussion of eshaha, saha, eshaa, saa, tat and etat (abhyaasa pustakam)
4. Discussion of kaha, kaa and kim (abhyaasa pusktakam)
5. Learnt new words from page 6 of abhyaasa pustakam
6. Read a story in Samskritam from Panchatantra and understood the meaning.
Homework:
Turn in the homework given on 29th Jan.
January 29, 2012 - Week 3 Update
1. Meanings of the two new VS verses we learned today.
2. Review of the meaning of first two verses.
3. Discussion of एषः, सः, एषा, and सा (abhyAsa pustakam)
4. Learned 15+ new sentences (will send PDF for #4 and #5 soon)
5. Wrote the following words:

1. Read first pages of abhyAsa pustakam. 4th and 5th page has some new material and pages 4-6 will be discussed in the next class.

January 22, 2012 - Week 2 Update
- We discussed the meaning of the Sri Vishnu Sahasranama verses word by word. Even though I had taught the meaning for the verse "shuklambaradharam ..." in the last class, we repeated it. But it was done in a quiz format, to check how many remembered the meaning.
- We used the second verse to understand bandhu vaachaka shabda and explored the meaning of -- maataa, pitaa, bhraataa, svasaa, bhaginii, maataamahii, maataamaha, pitaamahii, pitaamaha, putra, pautra, naptaa, putri, duhita, dauhitrii, dauhitra, pati, patni, etc. We also asked kids to name these relationships. Some did not know all the grandparents names.
- We related #2 with the verse vyaasam vasishhTa naptaaram verse and explored vyaasa's lineage (only paternal, in the context of the verse).
- Kids wrote the names of vasishhTa, shakti, paraashara, vyaasa, and shuka. We kind of simplified the samkutaksharas (after writing in the orginal form).
Homework:
- Read first 5 pages of abhyaasa pustakam (optional, many may not have the book). We covered these last year and reading them will refresh their memory.

January 15, 2012 - Week 1 Update
1. We discussed the meaning of verse "shuklaambaradharam ..." word by word.
2. Children wrote the names "gaNeshaH" and "hariH" in devanAgari lipi on paper.
3. We counted from 1 - 20 and then from 20 - 100 in tens.
4. We read the story "mUrkhaH anucharaH" and dicussed the meaning line by line
5. We discussed the Sanskrit names for head, eyes, nose, chin, cheeks, neck, ears, head, and hair.
Homework:
1. Children should explain the meaning of verse "shuklaambaradharam ..." to one of their parents
2. Children should write the name "hariH" and "gaNeshaH " in devanAgari lipi five times. This has to be submitted to the teacher.
