Hindi Paathshaala Workbook - Spring 2012 Semester

April 15, 2012 - Week 14 Update

We had a short class this week due to the weather (tornado alert) and also the Saraswati Homam.

This week - we revised our vyanjans, the matras covered so far and  the new matra for ओ.

April 8, 2012 - Week 13 Update

i. We went over some more matras - ी ु ू and े. Given the repetitive nature of the matras, we are trying to speed up  to create some more time to practice on the semester-end presentation. We are counting on the parents to help their children stay up to speed by making them practice writing the maatras at home.

ii. We practiced the song "Lakdi Ki Kaathi" on the audio and karaoke tracks. Interest in the song is not as high as expected, so we filtered out the students who did not want to participate, to enable them focus on another mode of presentation. We expect 6-8 students (mostly girls) to perform the song.

iii. We talked about performing a play with the remaining students. However, this would require quite a bit of practice and given where we are and the limited time available, it makes the whole idea debatable. We will have to see how the preparation goes.

Homework:

i. Parents should encourage their kids to write all the Hindi letter with the matras taught so far - you can refer to pages 13-18 in the workbook.

With the end-of-semester presentation coming up, we have to apportion some time for preparation towards this, which means that we have to cover the classroom material faster than we want to. Your cooperation in making the kids practice the letters at home will help us stay on target without losing the kids in classroom.

ii. If your kid is interested in performing the song, please have them practice at home. The audio, karaoke and lyrics can all be found on the Gurukulam Hindi page.

April 1, 2012 - Week 12 Update

Classwork: Having completed all the Consonants (Vyanjans) and Vowels (Swars) in the Hindi alphabet, we had our first exposure to "Matras". We covered the "a", "aa" and "i" matras.

We made it an interactive session where all the students took turns to come up to the whiteboard, draw the matra on a row of letters, and to speak the "modified" letters out to the class.

The class did not have to take notes, we asked the students to refer to Pages 13 and 14 in their workbooks for all that was written on the white-board.

For homework, parents should ensure that their kids should practice writing the letters with the matras that were taught. Most importantly, they should make sure that the kids understand the concept behind the matras. If they can come up with 1-2 words as examples for each matra, that is a bonus.

Semester-End Preparation: On the preparation for the semester-end-presentation front, the kids had their first practice session with the song "Lakdi Ki Kaathi". The class seems a little divided on the idea of performing a song; not everyone shares the same enthusiasm about singing. We may have to pursue other ideas (e.g., a play) to elicit more interest. We will talk more about this in upcoming classes.

March 25, 2012 - Week 11 Update

A. Related To The End Of Semester Presentation:

i. We talked about the end of semester presentation to the parents. The kids are excited about performing a song for this event.

ii. We listened to snippets of 4 Hindi songs and got the kids to vote on their favorite song.

iii. By popular vote, "Lakdi Ki Kaathi" (Maasoom) won out. This is the song that we will go with for the end of semester presentation.

iv. The audio track for the song can be found here: Lakdi Ki Kaathi MP3.

v. The karaoke track can be found attached here:   Lakdi Ki Kaathi Karaoke MP3.

vi. The lyrics to the song can be found here: Lakdi Ki Kaathi Lyrics PDF

vii.  Parents should encourage their kids to practice on the song with or without the karaoke track in the background.

B. Related To Classwork Progress

i. We completed all the letters in the Hindi alphabet.

ii. In the upcoming classes, we will talk about combining all the consonants (vyanjans) with the Vowels (Swars).

iii. Parents should strongly encourage their kids to keep up the practice of identifying at least one word for each Swar/Vyanjan that has been taught. This will help the kids improve their Hindi learning and vocabulary, and also help them keep pace with what is being taught.

March 18, 2012 - Week 10 Update

We had an interesting class this week - very few of our Hindi students attended, due to Spring Break and Holi Mela. We also combined our class with the Sanskrit class and so, we made an effort to keep all the audience equally entertained.

We reviewed some of the Hindi letters that were previously taught at random, then we introduced some new Hindi letters.

We plan to go over these new letters in the next Hindi class again for the benefit of all the Hindi students.

No Homework this week :-) We hope the kids enjoy their break but take some time to revise all they have learnt so far!

Namaste! Updates for Hindi Paathshaala Spring 2012 Semester

We had our first Hindi class of the Spring 2012 semester on January 15, 2012. Our class strength is now at 30+ students - we are very excited to see our class growing each semester. Our goal is to have all these children talking, singing, reading and writing in Hindi soon.

Since we have a mixed group of students, both in age and Hindi abilities, we will be organizing our class into smaller groups, with 1 teacher per group. We have a very committed group of Hindi teachers this semester, which will be a big advantage for your children.

The youngest group will focus on spoken Hindi and start with alphabets. The older groups will move quickly into conversational Hindi, reading and writing.

HINDI CLASS SYLLABUS: Please print out 2 copies of the Hindi Syllabus Workbook (link is at the top of the page) - this book will serve as the syllabus, text book and work book. Send 1 copy for the classroom and keep the other one at home for homework and reference.

HOMEWORK: Parents, please take the time to review weekly work at home with your children. Children will learn faster with practice and repetition than by listening to material once a week. Homework will be minimal - less than 30 mnts a week but will help strengthen their Hindi skills.

CLASSWORK: Children will practice reading, writing & conversation from and in their workbooks. For additional practice, we have provided notebooks to the children. For younger kids, various teaching aids like flash cards, games and props like animal figures, will be used. For older kids, our primary goal is to make Hindi conversation easier so we will encourage them to talk and reply in Hindi as much as possible.
